wildlife This region comes into the mention of history for the first time in the 4th century BC. Sopara (Nalasopara) and Kalyan were the two ancient ports that did trade with Greece and Middle East. A trade route connecting these two centers passed through this area. The Buddhist rock cut caves at Kanheri also served as resting points on this journey.

The forests of Yeur and Nagla came under the state property of the Maratha Empire. In 1945, the newly established Forest Department surveyed these forests and formalized their management. At that time this area was known as the "Krishnagiri National Park" and the area was just 20.26 sq. km.

In 1969, several smaller pieces of land of varying ownership were included in this area and a new Forest Department unit was created, to administer it. This was the “Borivli National Park Sub Division” and "Krishnagiri National Park" was renamed as "Borivali National Park". It was named as "Sanjay Gandhi National Park" in the 1980s. This is its formal name today, though many still refer to it as the Borivli National Park.
