Rafting experience is graded chiefly on the challenge of rapids the route encounters. Rapids are graded from 1 to 6:
Grade 1 – Beginner level. An easy introductory experience on smooth waters. Good for short trips or scenic routes.
Grade 2 – Still quite easy, but has a taste of the thrill of the rapids. Includes enjoyable rapids, which require very basic maneuvering skill.
Grade 3 – This is where you need to use your skill, and begin paying careful attention. While not very dangerous, bring a sense of acomplishment.
Grade 4 – This is for those with some experience behind them, or at least an proven physical efficiency, preferably in the outdoors. Challenging and thrilling.
Grade 5 – Previous experience is definitely required and can really be tested. The surge of the rapids and breathtaking excitement are not to be taken lightly.
Grade 6 – This is for the guys who don't need to read this. Extreme rapids and dangerous routes that need every ounce of skill to navigate are to be found here.
