Wilderness programmes for students
Wilderness camps involve stays in places away from human inhabitation. Participants learn the skills of living amid nature and discover the world around them. The camp begins with arrival on location and identification of the place to stay in. This could be a cave, or an area to pitch tents or even an improvised shelter in the case of older students.
Water sources are identified, cooking cleaning and toilet areas are agreed upon, and the group settles into their "home". Various duties related with living there like cooking, maintaining fuel supplies, cleaning, maintaining the living area, ferrying water, guarding camp, etc are identified, and responsibility shared.
We then begin to learn of the world around us, plant and animal life, finding direction, survival skills, navigation by stars, precautions, properties of plants and animals and their relevance to humans, etc.
Such programmes help develop a close interest in the environment and an understanding of the human impact on it. Debates, brain storming and creative expression encourage continuing active participation in behaviour that benifits the environment, while information of such issues and the opinions of organizations working to generate awareness and their suggestions to us enhance understanding and impact.
This is a very good programme for school students.
